Cancel insurance after pickup and title hand-off are complete, never before. Until then, you may still legally own the car, so an early cancellation can leave an uninsured loss on you. Some states also penalize an insurance lapse on a vehicle that is still registered.
If California requires a plate, registration, or release step for your situation, finish that first. Then call the insurer and use the pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and title hand-off
Do not start the insurance change until the car has been picked up and the signed title has been handed off. Match your records: pickup receipt, donation paperwork, title copy or photo, and the date the vehicle left your control. If pickup is imminent but not finished, keep coverage active until the hand-off is complete. This protects you during the last day.
Handle registration or plates first
Before calling the insurer, check whether your situation has any California DMV step. Some states require plates to be surrendered or transferred before insurance ends; others do not. California may treat standard plates and special plates differently. Complete any required registration, plate, or notice step first. Use our separate release-of-liability guide, then confirm details with the California DMV.
Call with the donation date
Call or message your insurer after those ownership and registration steps are done. Say the vehicle was donated, give the pickup/title-transfer date, and ask the company to make that the effective date for removing coverage. If the insurer asks for a bill of sale, receipt, or title proof, provide a copy and keep the original paperwork.
Remove or cancel coverage
If you have a multi-car policy, ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle and leave the other cars insured. If this was your only car, ask to cancel the policy as of the pickup/title-transfer date. If you still drive any other vehicle, keep continuous coverage in place through another policy before you cancel.
Request any premium refund
If you prepaid the policy, ask whether a prorated refund is owed from the effective cancellation or removal date. Refund handling depends on your policy terms and billing status, so ask for the amount, method, and expected processing steps in writing. If you pay monthly, confirm whether the change stops future automatic payments too.
Keep written proof together
Save the insurer’s confirmation, the policy change page, refund note, pickup receipt, and title-transfer paperwork in one file. Keep screenshots of online chats or portal confirmations. Do not rely only on a phone conversation. If a billing notice arrives later, respond with the written cancellation or vehicle-removal confirmation and the effective date you gave the insurer.
What to tell your insurer
Use a simple script: “I donated this vehicle. Pickup and title hand-off were completed on [date]. Please remove this vehicle, or cancel this policy if it is my only vehicle, effective that date.” Do not use an earlier date. If the representative offers an earlier cancellation, repeat that you want coverage through the transfer date. Ask for written confirmation showing the vehicle, VIN if available, effective date, refund status, and whether any balance remains.
Common questions
Can I cancel insurance before pickup if I stopped driving the car?
No. Keep insurance active until pickup and title hand-off are complete. A parked car can still be damaged, stolen, or involved in a loss. If the car is still registered, an early lapse can also create problems in some states. Cancel after transfer, not before.
What if the donated car was on a multi-car policy?
Ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle from the policy. Do not cancel the whole policy if other household vehicles still need coverage. Give the pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date and confirm that the remaining vehicles and drivers stay insured.
Will I get money back after I cancel?
Possibly. If you prepaid for coverage beyond the effective cancellation or removal date, ask for a prorated refund. The amount depends on your policy and billing status. Get the refund amount, method, and any remaining balance in writing before you end the call.

After pickup, title hand-off, and any required DMV steps, your insurance change is usually a straightforward phone call: use the transfer date, ask about any refund, and save proof. If your car has just been picked up, gather your paperwork and make the insurance call when you are ready.
