If your car’s registration has expired in Fresno, you can still donate it. With Cruz Fresno, what matters most is that you have a valid California title in your name, not current tags. You don’t need to pay back registration fees, pass smog first, or make the car drivable. We arrange a free tow from your driveway, garage, or curb and you still receive a tax-deductible receipt benefiting Heritage for the Blind.
Here’s how it works in California: as long as you’re the titled owner, we can accept vehicles with lapsed or expired registration, even if they’ve been sitting for months in Tower District, Sunnyside, Woodward Park, or out in Clovis and Madera Ranchos. Our towing partner picks up the vehicle at no cost to you, and we handle the transfer. After pickup, you simply notify the DMV of the transfer of ownership to protect yourself from future tickets or fees. Once donated, the vehicle becomes our responsibility, and you get a donation receipt you can use at tax time.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm you have the title in your name
In Fresno, the expired registration usually isn’t the issue—the title is. Find your California title and make sure your name matches your ID. Even if the tags are years old or the car hasn’t passed smog, a clear title lets Cruz Fresno accept the donation and start the process quickly.
2. Tell us about your car and the expired tags
Call or submit our short online form with your vehicle’s year, make, model, and where it’s located around Fresno Metro—whether that’s Fig Garden, Hoover, Downtown Fresno, Clovis, or beyond. Be open that the registration is expired or lapsed; we work with that every day and will confirm eligibility on the spot.
3. Schedule your free tow anywhere in Fresno Metro
You don’t have to drive it to us. We coordinate a professional towing company to pick up your vehicle at no cost to you—whether it’s parked in your apartment lot near River Park, in your driveway in Sunnyside, or on rural property outside Sanger. You choose a convenient pickup window that fits your schedule.
4. Sign the title at pickup and hand over keys
At pickup, you’ll sign the California title over to Cruz Fresno’s authorized agent. The tow driver will guide you where to sign. Keys are helpful but not always required for a non-running car. Once the title is signed, responsibility for the vehicle transfers and you’re no longer on the hook for it.
5. Notify the DMV and keep your tax receipt
After pickup, submit a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability with the California DMV (online or by mail) listing Cruz Fresno as the new owner. This protects you from future tickets, fees, or tolls. Then save the donation receipt we mail for your records and potential tax deduction, generally $500 or more.
6. Your expired-tag car helps Heritage for the Blind
Cruz Fresno processes your donated vehicle and sends the proceeds to Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) supporting people who are blind or visually impaired. Even with expired tags or mechanical issues, your car is turned into meaningful support—while you clear space at home and move on from a DMV headache.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or damaged California title
Tip: If you’ve lost the title or it’s badly damaged, we may need you to request a duplicate from the California DMV before pickup. In many cases, this is a simple form and small DMV fee. Contact us first so we can walk you through exactly what’s needed for your Fresno-area donation.
Name on the title doesn’t match the donor
Tip: If the car is still in a previous owner’s, spouse’s, or relative’s name, we’ll need proper signatures or supporting documents. For inherited vehicles, probate or a signed release may be required. Call us with your specific situation so we can explain what California will accept before the tow truck is scheduled.
Existing liens or financing on the vehicle
Tip: If a bank, credit union, or finance company is still listed as a lienholder on the title, we generally can’t complete the donation until the lien is released. Check the front of your title for any lienholder. If one appears, contact them about a lien release, then we can move ahead with your Fresno donation.
Tickets or penalties not tied to registration status
Tip: While you don’t need to pay back registration fees to donate, you’re still responsible for any citations or tolls issued to you before the transfer. Donating stops new issues going forward, but it doesn’t erase past tickets. Notifying the DMV of the transfer helps ensure later tickets aren’t linked to your name.
